Vue PACS Alternatives for Philips Vue PACS and Carestream PACS Sites

Philips publishes no price for Vue PACS or its successors, so we read 80 federal Vue PACS awards ($109,533 median), the KLAS scores, the open FDA recalls and the CISA advisories, and lay out what a renewal or migration quote must itemize and when adding AI beats replacing the PACS.

The short answer: Vue PACS is the radiology PACS Philips bought with Carestream's health IT business in 2019. Philips now sells two successors, HealthSuite Imaging in the cloud on AWS and Image Management 15 (FDA K240822), and publishes no price for any of them. In the 2025 Best in KLAS small PACS ranking, Vue PACS scored 63.9 and came last of eight. If your Vue PACS renewal is due, the real choice is between a Philips migration, a different PACS, or keeping Vue for now and fixing the read with AI.

Search for Vue PACS and you get Philips product pages, a KLAS comments page, an old Carestream brochure and the VA's software catalog. There is no independent buyer comparison. This guide is for the hospital, health system or VA imaging IT lead who has a Vue PACS support renewal or a Philips migration proposal on the desk and has to decide what to sign. Every figure below comes from a public record we can point to.

Who makes Vue PACS now?

Philips. Vue PACS was built by Carestream Health, which Onex created in 2007 when it bought Kodak's Health Group for $2.35 billion. Philips announced it was buying Carestream's Healthcare Information Solutions business on March 7, 2019, about 900 people moved over, and Philips reported the deal complete in 26 of 38 countries on August 1, 2019. The price was not disclosed. Carestream kept its X-ray, film and dental businesses, which is why you still see Carestream equipment and Philips software in the same department.

Philips then built two next-generation products on the Vue code base:

  • HealthSuite Imaging, launched at RSNA in November 2023 as a cloud-based next generation of Vue PACS running on AWS. Philips says it has moved more than 80 sites in the US and Latin America onto it. That is Philips' own count.
  • Image Management 15, launched November 24, 2025 as the next generation of Vue PACS for on-premises and hybrid sites, with a zero footprint diagnostic viewer. FDA cleared it as K240822 on April 24, 2024. Philips launched it in the US first.

If you run Vue PACS 12, both are pitched to you as upgrades. Neither is a version bump. Each one is a platform change with its own migration, training and contract.

How much does Vue PACS cost?

Philips publishes no price for Vue PACS, HealthSuite Imaging or Image Management 15. The best public benchmark is what federal buyers have paid. We read every USAspending award that names Vue PACS or Carestream PACS since fiscal 2008 and kept only the rows that are clearly the PACS software, its licenses, support or upgrades.

Federal Vue PACS awardsFigure
Awards kept80, totaling $33.66 million
Median award (77 priced)$109,533
Middle half of awards$29,746 to $603,901
Largest award$6,647,305, VA VISN 16 radiology DIN-PACS, February 2017
Largest Philips-era award$4,371,139, VA Philips Vue PACS annual SMA (support and maintenance), December 2022, through a reseller

Carestream years vs Philips years72 awards $26.64M vs 8 awards $7.02M

Two things matter in that table. First, the $4.37 million line is a single year of support and maintenance for one VA network, which tells you how large the recurring side of a Vue contract can get at scale. Second, $33.66 million is a floor. We dropped 298 Philips PACS awards worth $172.6 million that never name Vue or Carestream, because some of them could be IntelliSpace PACS (covered separately in our IntelliSpace PACS alternatives guide), and we dropped Vue Pack ophthalmic kits and IntelliVue monitors that a keyword search drags in.

For smaller sites, the Philips-era federal lines show what the extras cost: $101,480 to integrate Vue PACS with Cerner at a VA site in 2021, $24,140 to relocate Vue PACS network infrastructure in 2025, and $66,460 for Vue PACS training in late 2025. Those are the line items a migration quote should show separately. We compare them against other vendors on our PACS pricing and cloud PACS cost page.

What is wrong with Vue PACS, according to the public record?

Nothing that should scare you off on its own, but three records are worth reading before a renewal.

KLAS scores. On the public Best in KLAS pages, Philips Vue PACS scored 70.8 in small PACS for 2024, eighth of nine ranked, against a market average of 77.9. In 2025 it scored 63.9, last of eight, against an average of 79.2, while Sectra led at 93.0. In large PACS it scored 65.8 in 2025 and was not ranked. KLAS also tags the product with limited market share.

FDA recalls. openFDA lists three recall events, all Class II. A 2013 Carestream recall over CT and MR images that might not load was closed in 2015. Two Philips recalls are still open: a 2024 recall covering 2,439 systems on Vue PACS 12.1.5 to 12.2.8.454, where the CT perfusion export can give wrong ischemic map values, and a March 2026 recall of 3,552 Vue Motion V12 units, where cine frames can show out of order.

Security advisories. CISA advisory ICSMA-21-187-01 listed 16 vulnerabilities in Vue PACS 12.2 and earlier, the worst scored 9.8. ICSMA-24-200-01 in July 2024 told sites to move to 12.2.8.410. If your version is older, the upgrade is a security task, not a feature choice, and it should be in the renewal scope at no extra charge.

There is no published end-of-life date for Vue PACS 11 or 12. The VA's technology catalog leaves both the end-of-life and desupport columns empty. Ask Philips for that date in writing before you sign a multi-year term.

Read the recall row with care. A vendor with a larger install base and more product versions will log more recalls, and an open recall usually means the fix is still rolling out, not that nothing is being done. What it does tell you is which questions to put to the sales team. For the GE side in depth, see our GE Healthcare Centricity PACS alternatives page, and for the Sectra quote, Sectra PACS alternatives.

What should a Vue PACS renewal or migration quote include?

A Philips proposal will usually arrive as a move to HealthSuite Imaging or Image Management 15. Ask for these lines separately, because each one moves the five-year total:

  1. License or subscription, priced per study or per year, with the volume band it assumes.
  2. Annual support and maintenance, with the percentage it rises each year.
  3. Hosting: AWS consumption for HealthSuite Imaging, or server hardware and its refresh cycle for on-premises.
  4. Data migration of priors, including who validates it and what happens if studies fail to move.
  5. Interfaces to the EHR and RIS. The VA paid $101,480 for one Vue to Cerner integration.
  6. Training, with hours per radiologist and technologist.
  7. The security patch level the price includes, and the end-of-support date for your current version.
  8. Exit terms: export format, timeline and price if you leave at the end of the term.

If you are sending the same list to three or four PACS vendors, run it as a formal RFP with one response template, so the numbers line up. A procurement platform that collects supplier responses side by side saves a week of spreadsheet reconciliation and gives finance an audit trail for the decision.

What are the alternatives to Vue PACS?

There are three realistic paths.

Stay with Philips and migrate. HealthSuite Imaging suits a site that wants to stop running PACS servers. Image Management 15 suits a site that wants to stay on premises. Either way you keep the Philips relationship and the familiar Vue reading layout.

Change PACS vendor. Hospitals leaving Vue most often look at Sectra, Visage, Fujifilm Synapse and GE, with Intelerad, INFINITT and Merge on smaller shortlists. Our PACS software comparison separates the deployment models, and Visage PACS alternatives covers the vendor large health systems pick for speed.

Keep Vue for now and change the read. If the radiologists are fine with the viewer and the real pain is volume, a PACS migration does not fix it. Urgent studies still wait behind routine ones and reports still take as long to dictate. That is the gap an AI assistant closes without touching the PACS contract.

Can I add AI to Vue PACS without replacing it?

Yes. An assistant receives studies from Vue PACS over standard DICOM, flags suspected findings, moves urgent studies to the top of the worklist and drafts a structured report that the radiologist edits and signs. Radiologists keep reading in the Vue viewer. Our PACS integration guide shows what connects to what, and radiology worklist prioritization covers the triage side. Pricing is published per reading radiologist on our pricing page, so you can price the AI decision today and leave the PACS decision for when the Vue term ends.

Common questions about Vue PACS

Is Carestream Vue PACS the same as Philips Vue PACS?

Yes. Philips bought Carestream's health IT business, including Vue PACS, Vue RIS, Vue Motion and Vue for Cloud, in 2019. The product is now sold as Philips Vue PACS or Philips Image Management. Carestream still exists as a separate company selling X-ray systems and film.

Is Vue PACS end of life?

No public end-of-life date exists for Vue PACS 11 or 12. Philips is moving customers to HealthSuite Imaging and Image Management 15, and the VA's catalog lists no desupport date. Ask Philips in writing for the end-of-support date of your version before you renew.

Is Philips Vue PACS FDA cleared?

Yes. Carestream filed seven LLZ 510(k) clearances for its PACS between 2008 and 2017, the latest K170580 on April 11, 2017, and Philips cleared Image Management V15 as K240822 on April 24, 2024. No 510(k) is listed under the HealthSuite Imaging name.

How does Vue PACS rank in KLAS?

On the public Best in KLAS pages, Vue PACS scored 63.9 in small PACS for 2025, last of eight ranked vendors, against a market average of 79.2. It was not ranked in large PACS. KLAS labels it as having limited market share.
