Volpara Alternatives for Breast Density, Risk and Tracking Software After Lunit

Lunit bought Volpara for about $194 million and now runs it under the Lunit name. We read the FDA and federal records: 25 awards totaling $1.6 million, five other cleared density products, the tracking vendors that replace MRS, and what to ask Lunit before you renew.

Breast center director and radiologist reviewing breast density reports

The short answer: Volpara sells breast density, breast cancer risk, screening analytics and mammography reporting and tracking software, used at more than 2,000 US sites. Lunit, the Korean AI company, bought Volpara in 2024 for about $194 million, and since November 2025 the business runs under the Lunit name. The main alternatives are Hologic Quantra, iCAD PowerLook Density, ScreenPoint Transpara Density, Densitas and DeepHealth for density, and MagView, PenRad and Ikonopedia for reporting and tracking.

This page is for the person who signs the Volpara renewal: the director of a breast imaging center, a hospital breast program manager or a VA or military mammography lead. Most of what ranks for Volpara today is the company's own pages, investor coverage of the Lunit deal and patients looking up their density score. None of it helps you decide whether to renew, so we put the product record, the federal purchases and the honest list of alternatives on one page.

Ownership facts come from Lunit and Volpara announcements and trade press (AuntMinnie, Korea Economic Daily). Clearances come from the openFDA 510(k) database. Federal figures are from USAspending.gov, award types A to D, fiscal 2008 to 2026, pulled October 7, 2026, with every recipient name and description read by hand.

Who owns Volpara now?

Lunit owns it. Volpara Health Technologies was founded in New Zealand and listed in Australia, and it grew in the US mostly by acquisition. Knowing the chain matters because the name on your contract may be MRS Systems, CRA Health, Volpara or Lunit, depending on when you signed.

YearEvent
2018Volpara density software cleared by the FDA as Volpara Imaging Software, K182310. A later version followed in 2021 as K211279.
2019 onwardVolpara buys MRS Systems of Seattle, maker of the MRS mammography reporting and tracking system, in 2019. It later buys CRA Health, a Massachusetts General Hospital spin-out running over two million risk assessments a year, for $18 million plus up to $4 million on performance goals. CRA is the risk software Volpara sells as Risk Pathways.
2024Lunit completes its takeover of Volpara for about $194 million. Lunit's stated reason was Volpara's installed base of more than 2,000 US sites and its library of over 100 million mammography images.
2025On November 6, Volpara starts operating under the Lunit brand. The former Volpara company becomes Lunit International and runs sales and customer support for the US, Europe, Oceania and Asia.

None of this means the product is going away. Lunit said at the time that its products and Volpara's did not overlap, and federal orders were still naming Volpara in late 2025. What changes is who you negotiate with and what they want. Lunit sells its own detection AI, INSIGHT MMG and INSIGHT DBT, and a renewal is the natural moment for a bundle pitch.

Which Volpara products are on your contract?

Volpara is not one product. A breast center often holds two or three lines, and each has a different set of alternatives, so start by listing what you actually pay for.

Volpara lineWhat it doesMain alternatives
Density (Volpara Imaging Software)Measures volumetric breast density on each mammogram and outputs a density grade for the report and the patient letterHologic Quantra, iCAD PowerLook Density, Transpara Density, Densitas densityai, DeepHealth Saige-Density

Aspen Lung and Volpara LungLung cancer screening tracking and reportingLung screening modules from the same tracking vendors

If MRS is the line up for renewal, our MRS mammography reporting system breakdown covers that product on its own, and mammography tracking software compares the tracking vendors with their federal award records.

What does Volpara cost?

Volpara and Lunit publish no prices. The only checkable US figures are federal purchase orders, and they are useful because they are per site and itemized. We found 25 prime awards to Lunit Americas and Volpara Health totaling $1,600,863, with a median of $50,750 per award.

OrderAgency and dateAmount
Mammography tracking subscription and service maintenanceVA, July 2025$51,573.75
Screening mammogram subscription serviceVA, July 2024$72,815
Aspen Breast upgrade, maintenance and support, VISN 8VA, October 2024$136,000
Volpara lung module, unlimited patient tracking and reportingVA, November 2025$14,500
Volpara agreementVA, December 2025$18,000
Mammography reporting system supportDefense Health Agency, September 2021$438,810
Volpara software, MRS SystemsDefense, September 2023$59,000

By agency, the VA accounts for 15 awards and $945,894 and Defense for 9 awards and $644,969. Awards ran every year from 2020 to 2025. One thing to watch: USAspending lists the older MRS and Aspen orders under the current recipient name, Lunit Americas, so a search for MRS Systems alone undercounts. We excluded a 2017 CRA Health award because it predates the acquisition.

For a single commercial breast center, expect separate lines for each module, an annual subscription or support fee, and a one-time version or upgrade fee when a major release ships. Several of the VA orders above carry exactly that "base plus four option years" structure.

What are the best Volpara alternatives for a breast imaging center?

It depends on which line you are replacing, and most centers replace one at a time.

For density, five other products hold FDA clearance. Hologic Quantra (K163623, 2017) is Hologic's own density software. iCAD PowerLook Density Assessment (K211506, 2021) comes with ProFound AI, now owned by RadNet. ScreenPoint Transpara Density (K232096, 2023) pairs with Transpara detection. Densitas densityai (K192973, 2020) is a smaller independent. DeepHealth Saige-Density (K243705, 2024) is also RadNet. If you want a density vendor that runs no imaging centers of its own, that narrows the field to Hologic, ScreenPoint and Densitas.

For reporting and tracking, MagView, PenRad and Ikonopedia are the usual shortlist. Tracking systems are not FDA-cleared devices, which is normal, so compare them on the MQSA audit report, the lay letter workflow and how they connect to your RIS.

For risk, the decision is usually whether to keep a standalone risk product or use the module built into the tracking system you already run. Fewer systems usually wins unless your genetics program needs the extra depth.

For detection, Volpara never sold it, but Lunit does, and you will be offered INSIGHT. The alternatives are iCAD ProFound AI, Hologic Genius AI, Transpara, MammoScreen and DeepHealth Saige-Dx. We compare them on iCAD ProFound AI alternatives and cover Lunit on Lunit alternatives.

Volpara vs Hologic Quantra for breast density

Quantra is the obvious alternative if your mammography fleet is Hologic, because it runs on the same images and the same service contract. Volpara is the stronger choice in a mixed fleet, because it works across vendors and gives one density method for every patient. If you run both Hologic and another brand, switching to Quantra can leave you with two density methods in one practice, which is a reporting headache. Decide by fleet, not by feature list.

Questions to ask Lunit before you renew Volpara

  • Which legal entity is the counterparty now, and do the terms of the original MRS, CRA Health or Volpara contract carry over unchanged?
  • Do our images or outcomes feed Lunit model training? Volpara's 100 million image library was one of the stated reasons for the deal, so get the data use terms in writing.
  • How long is support committed for each module we hold, and is any module being folded into a Lunit product?
  • Is the renewal priced per module or as a bundle, and what is the price if we decline the INSIGHT detection add-on?
  • What does an export of our tracking database and MQSA audit history look like, in what format, and at what cost?

If you decide to test the market, run the replacement as a structured vendor RFP with the same scored questions for every bidder, because density and tracking quotes are rarely itemized the same way.

Where an AI reading assistant fits

Density, risk and tracking keep the screening program compliant. None of them helps a radiologist get through more studies in a session, and that is the complaint most breast centers actually have. Radiological.ai flags suspected findings for review, prioritizes the worklist so flagged studies surface early, and drafts the structured breast report in your template. It works across X-ray, CT and MRI as well as mammography, sits beside Volpara or whatever replaces it, and the radiologist reviews, edits and signs every study. Plans are priced per reading radiologist on the pricing page, and AI mammography software shows how it works on breast studies.
