Nova RIS vs RamSoft PACS and the RamSoft Alternatives Imaging Centers Shortlist

RamSoft sells two PACS platforms, PowerServer and the cloud-native OmegaAI, and publishes no price for either. What each one is, what a RamSoft quote should itemize, how it compares with Intelerad, eRAD and Novarad on FDA clearances, and when adding AI beats migrating the PACS.

The short answer: Nova RIS vs RamSoft comes down to who already runs your PACS. NovaRIS is Novarad's RIS, sold next to NovaPACS and strongest at community hospitals; RamSoft builds its RIS into PowerServer and OmegaAI, so RIS and PACS arrive on one contract, which suits multi-site imaging centers. Neither publishes a price. The Nova RIS vs RamSoft comparison below lays out the split. RamSoft itself sells two PACS platforms. PowerServer is the long-running RIS/PACS used by independent imaging centers and teleradiology groups, available in the cloud or on premises. OmegaAI, launched in 2022, is a cloud-native RIS, PACS and VNA running on Microsoft Azure. The alternatives most often shortlisted against it are Intelerad, eRAD and Novarad, and if the real reason you are shopping is AI reporting, you may not need to replace the PACS at all.

Company and product facts below come from RamSoft's own product pages and history. FDA clearance data is from the openFDA 510(k) database, product code LLZ, retrieved September 2026.

Who is RamSoft?

RamSoft is a privately held radiology software company headquartered in Toronto. Dr. Ramanathan founded it in 1994 and showed the company's first DICOM software at RSNA that year, and he built the business with his sons Vijay and Siva. Its core market is outpatient imaging: independent imaging centers, teleradiology groups and smaller hospitals across North America, which is exactly the segment that still buys a RIS and PACS on its own instead of inheriting one from an enterprise EHR.

RamSoft has filed with the FDA for three decades. Its LLZ clearances (image management and processing, 21 CFR 892.2050) run from K982563 in 1998 through K031562 for RamSoft PACS 3.0 in 2003, K052460 for PowerServer, PowerReader, Gateway and PowerCache in 2005, K141881 for the RapidResults mobile viewer in 2014, and K222476 for the OmegaAI Image Viewer in November 2022.

Are you being quoted RamSoft PowerServer or OmegaAI?

This is the first question to settle, because the two products are priced, deployed and supported differently, and RamSoft presents them as separate products rather than one upgrade path.

If you already run PowerServer, the practical question is whether to stay, move to OmegaAI, or leave RamSoft. Ask your account manager in writing whether OmegaAI is priced as a new contract or a migration credit, and whether PowerServer has a published end-of-support date. A vendor with two platforms will eventually favor one of them, and you want that decided on paper before you sign a five-year term.

How much does RamSoft PACS cost?

RamSoft does not publish pricing for PowerServer or OmegaAI, and sales go through a quote. We also found no federal prime contract awards to RamSoft on USAspending.gov, so there is no public contract to benchmark against. What you can benchmark is the category. Our cloud PACS pricing breakdown uses real federal PACS awards, from roughly $253,000 for a single site up to $12.8 million for a national program, and lists the five line items every PACS quote bundles.

For a RamSoft quote specifically, make sure it separates these:

  • Licensing unit. Per study, per site, per concurrent reader or flat subscription. PowerServer's own page says adding users and modalities needs no extra licensing, so confirm which metric actually drives your renewal.
  • Storage and archive. On OmegaAI your images live in Azure. Get the included storage, the price per additional terabyte and the retrieval terms for old studies in writing.
  • Migration of priors. Moving ten years of studies off a legacy PACS is often the largest one-time cost, and it is billed separately.
  • Interfaces. Each HL7 feed to a referring EHR or billing system may carry its own setup fee.
  • Add-on modules. Blume, Stana, Essence and the AI reporting features may or may not be in the base price.
  • Exit terms. How studies and reports are exported, in what format, and at what cost if you leave.

Those exit terms and renewal dates are easy to lose track of across a five-year PACS deal, a separate RIS contract and a stack of interface agreements. Keeping every notice period and auto-renewal date in one place with contract management software is cheaper than discovering a missed cancellation window after the renewal has already gone through.

Nova RIS vs RamSoft for an imaging center

Nova RIS vs RamSoft usually comes down to who already owns your PACS. NovaRIS is Novarad's radiology information system for scheduling, exam tracking and reporting, and it is sold alongside NovaPACS. RamSoft builds its RIS into PowerServer and OmegaAI, so the RIS and PACS come from one contract. Neither vendor publishes a price, and neither RIS needs an FDA 510(k), so clearance counts tell you nothing about the RIS itself. If neither is a fit, radiology information system software lays out the wider RIS vendor shortlist and the RIS vs PACS split.

What does separate them in practice:

  • Hosting. OmegaAI runs only in the cloud on Microsoft Azure. PowerServer and the Novarad stack are offered on premises as well as hosted, so ask each vendor who patches the servers and who pays for the hardware refresh.
  • Market the product grew up in. NovaRIS was built for community and critical access hospitals (its KLAS honors are from 2008 and 2009, so treat them as history, not a current score). RamSoft's base is independent imaging centers and teleradiology groups with multi-site scheduling.
  • Upgrades. Novarad describes NovaPACS EI as evergreen, with upgrades included. With RamSoft, get in writing whether a move from PowerServer to OmegaAI is a migration credit or a new contract.
  • Billing. Ask both whether claims and payment posting are in the RIS or need a separate billing system, because that line item moves the five-year total more than the RIS license does.

If you are weighing the Novarad side in more depth, our Novarad PACS buyer's guide lists its FDA clearances, closed recalls and the one federal award on record. Whichever RIS you pick, the radiologist still dictates the report, and that is where an AI radiology reporting assistant saves time without touching the RIS contract.

When a RamSoft alternative makes sense, and when it does not

Switching PACS is expensive and slow. A migration of priors, new hanging protocols, retrained technologists and radiologists, and a period of running two systems in parallel can take most of a year. So be honest about the reason you are looking.

Replacing RamSoft makes sense when the platform itself is the problem: support you cannot get, a PowerServer deployment the vendor is steering you off, storage costs that grow faster than volume, or a teleradiology workflow that needs one worklist across many sites and is not getting it. Our teleradiology software comparison covers that multi-site worklist requirement in detail.

It usually does not make sense when the real driver is AI. OmegaAI advertises AI reporting, and plenty of PowerServer sites start shopping because they want that without a full platform migration. That is a reporting and triage problem, not an archive problem, and it can be solved on top of the PACS you already run.

The alternative that is not a new PACS

Radiological.ai does not store images and does not replace your PACS. It sits alongside it: studies arrive over DICOM, it flags suspected findings, moves likely urgent studies to the top of the worklist, and drafts the structured report into your template, and the radiologist reviews, edits and signs every read. Our radiology AI PACS integration page explains how that connects over DICOM and HL7 without a second login.

For a group weighing a six-figure PACS migration mainly to get AI reporting, that changes the math. Our pricing is published per reading radiologist: $399 a month on the Practice plan or $199 a month billed annually, and for multi-site groups $598 a month on the Group plan or $299 a month billed annually. You can try the assistant on a sample study at the top of this page before you talk to anyone.

Common questions about RamSoft PACS

Is RamSoft PowerServer cloud based?

Yes, PowerServer is offered as a cloud RIS/PACS and is listed on the Microsoft Azure Marketplace, and RamSoft also still supports on-premises implementations. OmegaAI is the product that is cloud-only, built natively on Azure with no local servers. Ask which deployment your quote assumes, because storage and support terms differ.

What is the difference between PowerServer and OmegaAI?

PowerServer is RamSoft's established RIS/PACS, cleared by the FDA in 2005 and sold in editions for imaging centers, teleradiology and small sites. OmegaAI is its newer cloud-native RIS, PACS and VNA platform, launched in 2022, with a universal worklist, workflow automation and AI reporting with voice dictation. RamSoft markets them as separate products.

Who are RamSoft's competitors?

For imaging centers and teleradiology groups, the usual shortlist is Intelerad, eRAD and Novarad (see Novarad PACS alternatives and what NovaPACS costs), with Sectra, Fujifilm and Agfa appearing more often in hospital deals. Ambra is now part of Intelerad, which GE HealthCare bought in March 2026 (see Intelerad PACS alternatives), and Medicai competes on cloud image sharing. INFINITT also shows up on imaging center shortlists; the INFINITT PACS system covers its federal price points. The right comparison depends on your study volume and whether you need RIS as well as PACS.

Can we add AI reporting without replacing RamSoft?

Usually, yes. AI reporting and triage tools connect over the same DICOM and HL7 standards the PACS already uses, so the flags and drafted report appear in the existing worklist and viewer. That lets a PowerServer site add AI without migrating priors, retraining staff or signing a new platform contract.
