PowerScribe 360 Headset and Microphone Compatibility Guide

Microsoft names four supported dictation devices for PowerScribe One, and none of them is a headset. What works, what carries over when you migrate off PowerScribe 360, how to fix a mic PowerScribe will not recognize, and what the hardware really costs.

The short answer: PowerScribe One supports four dictation devices by name in Microsoft's own documentation: the PowerMic II, the PowerMic III, the PowerMic 4 and the Philips SpeechMike 3700. Almost everyone searching for a "PowerScribe headset" means one of those handheld microphones rather than a wearable headset, because handhelds are what the supported list actually covers. Existing PowerMics carry over to PowerScribe One, so a migration off PowerScribe 360 does not force a hardware refresh. Microsoft's guidance is to plug the device straight into the back of the PACS workstation rather than through a monitor or a hub, and to check firmware before blaming the software.

This question comes up twice in the life of a radiology department. Once when a microphone dies mid-shift and somebody needs to know what to order, and once when a migration is being planned and the practice manager is trying to work out whether sixty readers are about to need sixty new devices. The two answers are different, and the second one has real money attached, so it is worth separating them properly.

What microphones are compatible with PowerScribe One?

Microsoft lists four supported models. That list is short on purpose: PowerScribe reads the device buttons, not just the audio, so a generic USB microphone can capture your voice without giving you the record, stop and navigation controls the workflow is built around.

PowerMic Mobile is a separate product rather than a fifth device. It turns a smartphone into the dictation microphone over the network, which suits teleradiologists and anyone reading from more than one location. It is worth evaluating on its own terms rather than as a cheaper handheld, because network conditions become part of your dictation experience the moment you adopt it.

Does the PowerMic III work with PowerScribe One?

Yes. The PowerMic III appears on Microsoft's supported list for PowerScribe One, and it also works with PowerScribe 360 Reporting. This is the single most useful fact for a group planning a migration: the handhelds you already own are not stranded assets. You are moving the software to the cloud, not replacing the hardware on every desk.

The caveat is firmware. Microsoft's own guidance notes that some microphones may need a firmware update to behave as expected, and points you at the manufacturer documentation or your internal IT process. That is worth building into the migration plan as a task rather than discovering it on go-live morning across forty workstations at once.

What is the best headset for PowerScribe?

This is the question where the search term and the reality diverge. There is no headset on Microsoft's supported device list. Every model named is a handheld dictation microphone with programmable buttons, and the buttons are the point: record, stop, field navigation and the transport controls all live under your thumb, which is what makes the dictate-and-correct loop fast enough to be worth doing.

A headset will physically work for audio capture in most speech systems, but you lose the button layer and you end up reaching for the keyboard between every field. Radiologists who have tried both almost always go back to the handheld. If your actual problem is neck strain or you want your hands free for scrolling a stack, the honest recommendation is to look at PowerMic Mobile or a foot pedal setup rather than a headset, and to test with one reader for a week before buying in volume.

How do I change the microphone in PowerScribe?

Device selection lives in the PowerScribe user preferences rather than in the Windows sound settings, which is the source of a lot of wasted troubleshooting. Changing the default recording device in Windows does not necessarily move PowerScribe onto it. Open the application preferences, find the microphone or audio device setting, select the device you actually want and save, then record a short test dictation to confirm the meter moves before you rely on it in a live read.

If you have several devices attached, for example a webcam microphone and a PowerMic, remove or disable the one you do not want. Ambiguity here is what produces the "it picked the wrong mic again" tickets after every workstation reimage.

Why is PowerScribe not recognizing my mic?

Work through it in this order, because the fixes get progressively more expensive.

Start with the physical connection. Microsoft specifically recommends connecting the microphone directly to a port on the back of the PACS workstation rather than through a monitor USB port, a docking station or an external hub. Monitor and hub ports are the most common single cause of a device that enumerates intermittently or drops out under load, and moving the cable takes ten seconds.

Then check firmware, per Microsoft's guidance. Then check the device selection in PowerScribe preferences, since a reimaged workstation often reverts to a different default. Then try the microphone on a known-good workstation and a known-good microphone on the problem workstation, which isolates hardware from configuration in about two minutes. Only after all of that is it worth opening a support case, and by then you will have the answers the first-line questions ask for anyway.

Has the PowerMic been discontinued?

Be careful with this one, because the loudest source on it is not neutral. Philips publishes marketing material stating that the PowerMic 3 and PowerMic 4 are being retired and that Microsoft has named the Philips SpeechMike the recommended successor. That is Philips describing an arrangement on its own promotional page. We could not find the same statement in Microsoft's public product documentation, and Microsoft still lists PowerMic II, III and 4 as supported devices for PowerScribe One.

So the accurate position in July 2026 is: the SpeechMike 3700 is genuinely a supported device, Philips is genuinely positioning it as the PowerMic replacement, and whether Nuance handhelds remain purchasable long term is a question for your Microsoft or reseller account team rather than for a comparison article. If you are placing a large hardware order, get the answer in writing before you commit, and ask specifically about availability of spares three years out.

What does PowerScribe dictation hardware actually cost?

Microphones look like a rounding error until you multiply them by a reader count and add the service line nobody mentions. US federal contract awards are public record, and they show dictation hardware being maintained under its own separately contracted agreements: one award of $18,736 for twelve months of preventative maintenance on PowerScribe PowerMics, followed by a near-identical $18,550 award the next year. That is recurring spend on microphones alone, sitting outside the software license entirely.

It fits a wider pattern in the same data. Across 183 federal contract awards naming PowerScribe between FY2016 and July 2026, worth $40,678,468 in total, the separately priced lines include upgrade services, data migration, downstream interface work, administrator training and radiologist training. We pulled the whole set apart on the PowerScribe 360 price and PowerScribe One pricing page, which is the only place we know of with verifiable numbers rather than estimates.

The practical version for a department: when you refresh forty or sixty handhelds across several sites, the reconciliation between the reseller quote, the purchase order and what physically arrives becomes its own small project, and teams doing it at volume tend to pull the line items straight off the supplier invoices rather than keying them into a spreadsheet by hand. Budget the service agreement as a recurring line from the start, not as a surprise in year two.

What happens to our microphones if we migrate off PowerScribe 360?

If you are moving to PowerScribe One, nothing. The supported device list overlaps, so the handhelds stay on the desks and the migration effort goes into templates, interfaces and training instead. That is the reassuring half of the answer, and it removes one line from the migration budget that groups often assume is there.

If you are moving somewhere else, the answer depends on the destination and it is a fair question to put to any vendor on your shortlist during the demo rather than after the contract. Ask which of your existing devices are supported, whether the button mapping carries over, and who owns the firmware problem when a workstation image changes. A vendor that has not thought about the hardware you already own has not thought very hard about migration in general.

It is worth saying that the hardware question is usually the smallest part of a reporting decision, and it can distract from the larger one. The retirement of PowerScribe 360 forces a choice that most groups would otherwise have deferred for years, and the microphones will work either way. The PowerScribe 360 migration checklist covers the parts that genuinely do carry risk, and the end of life dates set the clock: annual renewals and maintenance ended August 31, 2026, and full support ends August 31, 2027.

A microphone is an input device for a report you are already composing in your head.
